Stocking Fish in Farm Dams
Common Questions asked:
How many Fish should I put in my Dam ?
Well.. the General rule of thumb is .... for every meter or good step around the perimeter of the Dam .... you can put a Fish. You can put less in to suite your budget, but do not stock higher than this amount.
Sample Measurment only
This Sample Dam is 100 meters long and 50 meters wide ..... the calculation would be :
100 meters + 100 meters = 200
50 meters + 50 meters = 100
Your maximum Stocking = 300 Fish

Can I put multiple Species together ?
Yes you can, when you consider that in any natural River, Creek or Impoundments you can catch multiple Species, then you also can do the same with a private Dam Stocking.
Each of the inland species has a role to play in the ecosystem of the water body that it is inhabiting. But off course ... personal preference to species is up to the individuals tastes.
How can I improve the habitat of the Dam or help the Feed balance ?
If available in the spring as the water temperatures are rising some bales of good - / old or mulch hay, eg. Wheaten, Lucerne or Oaten Hay broken up and spread around the edge of the Dam helps to promote aquatic micro organisms that is then the base of the food chain for the spring and summer season.
What Protection fom Predators ?
Any stable structure eg. old tyres strapped together ... tree branches - or small trees such as pine trees, the size of a Xmas tree or that you can handle easy, laid into the water, gives very good Shelters. These can be fresh cut as this also provides feed through the break down of the organic matter. This also helps when you wish to try and catch your fish - as they will be commonly caught around thes structures where they feed.
Will they breed ?
If the conditions are right there is the possibility that they can breed, but the chances of survival
of the offsprings are very slim to nil with most the species.
